Summer Scuba Diving Lessons

Have you always wanted to scuba?

Now that you’ve moved to Florida, why not become a native and learn to dive to the bottom of the sea? We’re gathering a Cornerstone group for private scuba lessons. Al Jeffrey, owner of about 17 Scuba Quest stores, was a member of Covenant Life Presbyterian. He is offering Cornerstone an incredible deal. Normally, lessons are $350. Al is giving us $100 off coupon and private lessons catered to our group, so the price is just $250 to become certified.

What equipment do I need?
All diving equipment is included in the lessons, except for mask, fins, snorkel, and weight belt. These run about $250 in addition to your course costs.

What skills do I need?
On the first pool night, there is a swimming test. You must be able to tread water for 10 minutes, swim underwater for 25 feet, and swim using any stroke for 200 yards. You should be comfortable and at home in the water.

After being certified, how much does diving cost using rental equipment?
A normal day of diving runs a little more than $100 with rental equipment. This includes the dive boat and
two tanks for two dives.

How is the class organized? There are 6 instructional classes divided between “pool nights” and “class nights.” Your first dive will be in a freshwater lake. Your check-out dive will be in the Gulf of Mexico.
What kind of diving can I do? There is underwater photography, reef and wreck diving, spear fishing (Dave’s favorite), and lobstering/stone crabbing available in our area.

Class Details and Sign-ups: If we get at least 8 people, we can pick the details of our class. The class will start in late June and run for two to three weeks, depending on whether we want to do 2 or 3 classes per week. The check-out dives are on Saturdays. Call Ted Hamm or Dave Dickmann to sign-up at the church office at 907-3939.
