Talking Tolkien
During a weekend seminar at Cornerstone (11/21-22/2003), Prof. David M. Miller, PhD (Purdue, Emeritus) and Director of Education, Bill Martin, M.A. took on the subject of Christian imagination and high fantasy. These talks revolve around Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, but have a broader focus.
Considering the Code
Dan Brown's blockbuster novel, The Da Vinci Code remains both a chart-topping thriller and is now a major motion picture. More pointedly, it is a controversial revision of the Christian story. Over seven lectures, Bill Martin and Dave Dickmann look at the story within the story, analyzing and comparing the novel's accuracy claim with the New Testament and more accepted historical research.

Considering the Code - Contrary Marys
In this lecture from Cornerstone's "Considering the Code" seminar, Bill Martin compares the image of Mary Magdalene presented in The Da Vinci Code with her portrayal in the New Testament.
KEY LECTURE: In this lecture, Mr. Martin gives Christian parents tools to help them foster biblical discernment in their children. He critiques typical critics' pronouncements regarding some current fantasy literature and entertainment, and offers examples from his own experience.
KEY LECTURE: Dr. Miller returns to analyze the imagined cosmogony of the Silmarillion. He triangulates this with Tolkien's Christian worldview and that of the reader to offer the listener a fruitful way to read The Lord of the Rings. Further, Dr. Miller engages the audience in some comparisons between the books and the Peter Jackson films.
KEY LECTURE: In a single, short lecture, Mr. Martin shows how the literary fantasy of Tolkien and his colleague C.S. Lewis challenged the reigning paradigm of modernism in the mid-to-late 20th century. Approx 30 min. CD available.
